Today is our last day in Cape Town and a full free day. A group of us met downstairs to early this morning in hopes that Table Mountain would be open. It was still closed - even though it's gorgeous outside, the wind is howling. It has to be perfect conditions for the cable cars to run up and down the mountain. With no Table Mountain in the picture I decided to walk to Streetwires Cooperative. Was hoping they would have a wire & beaded mirror for my mirror wall. The ones they had were too large and too heavy, so maybe I can find a wooden one.
On the way back toward the hotel, I stopped at St. Stephens Church to photograph the outside. In 1799, during the first British occupation of the Cape, the Governor, Sir George Yonge, appropriated a portion of Riebeeck Square to build a theater. The theater was built and completed on November 17, 1800. However, it never really went over with the citizens and started to deteriorate. In 1838 Dr. Adamstown of the Presbyterian Church, wanted to use it as a school for the freed slaves and the Dutch Reformed Church supported the decision. During the week it was used as a school and on Sunday as a place of worship. It is the only Dutch Reformed Church to bear the name of a saint. It's still used today but is only open to the public Wednesday through Friday. Darn!
Headed back to Green Market Square to see what the vendors have - scored a super deal on an awesome mask (allegedly antique), hand painted canvas and some copper bracelets. So many vendors from Malawi. The Central Methodist Mission is an old church in Green Market Square that I wanted to visit. It's a Methodist Church which began at the beginning of the 19th century.
St. George's Cathedral was next. It is not open during the day because of all the homeless. The city feels it would be vandalized. It was one lead by Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu. On September 13, 1989, he lead over 30,000 in a march from St. George's Cathedral to the Grand Parade in protest as the people of South Africa had had enough of Apartheid, enforced segregation and years of political violence. I heard on the radio earlier today the he is once again in the hospital for an infection from a previous procedure.
The Waterfront was again calling my name. Caught the hotel shuttle to the Waterfront and went to Scratch Patch to dig for stones. Got a large bag of some very unique stones to use for decorating future crosses. Headed back to the Wharf and heard the most amazing band performing across from Cape Wheel. Had to start my malaria meds today so it was off to Anat Falafel for lunch.
Tomorrow morning starts the most amazing part of this trip - we're headed to Durban (east coast of South Africa) and will head up to the location of our first game drive. Can't wait!!
