This morning we visited Dumazulu Village to learn about the Zulu tribal customs and to have lunch. Very interesting.
We learned a man can have multiple wives while a woman can have only one man, but the woman can take her time and be selective in marriage. We saw inside a typical hut and were entertained by some tribal dances.
After lunch we headed to the Hluhluwe Game Reserve where four safari jeeps took our group through the park in search of the elusive animals. The first animal we saw not long after entering the park was the Warthog. Bless it's heart!
Next we saw the Impala and then the Zebra.
After that it was the Nyala and the White Rhino.
Our guide was great, he would spot the animals and then stop the jeep, tell us about the animal and then let us take photographs. We then saw the African Buffalo
and some female lions (who were passed out). Apparently they had made a kill last night and were exhausted. Our guide told us that they get so much oxygen flowing and use so much energy in a kill that they're exhausted when it's done. Oh my goodness, the next spotting was awesome! It was a herd of Elephants.
They started way off and we could see they were headed our way, so the guide backed the jeep up and they crossed the road right in front of us. A couple of them even stopped and looked at us like what the heck are you doing.
Next was one of the greatest sightings of all, a male Lion was way out sleeping near brush and trees. I was able to zoom in to capture a few shots.
He then held his head up, I got my camera focused and the guide moved the jeep. Bummer!! We kept driving all over the park and noticed a baby Rhino walking toward his mother and then they both started running down the hill toward us. They got almost all the way across the road and decided to poop.
It didn't look like it had been the first time.
As we were wrapping up the game drive and head toward the main gate, a group of African Buffalo decided to block the road.
They were much older buffalo - had very thick horns and were losing fur.
Quite the exciting day. Tomorrow we start heading to Kruger National Park.
